A Relaxed January Elopement at Millbrook Estate – Pat & Andy
Some love stories don't need a big wedding — they just need the right moment. Pat and Andy had been happily together for 47 years when they decided to make it official, quietly and entirely on their own terms. They travelled from Buckinghamshire for a just-the-two-of-us elopement at Millbrook Estate, with a joyful ceremony in the Summerhouse by the fire and five nights staying at Pulley Mill.
Together 47 Years — and Finally Married
Wedding date: 27th January 2026 | From: Buckinghamshire | Photographer: Michelle Ley Photography
Not every couple who elopes is newly swept up in romance. Some have simply been getting on with loving each other — quietly, steadily, for decades — and reach a point where making it official feels like exactly the right thing to do.
Pat and Andy had been together for over 47 years when they finally decided to get married. Practical reasons played a part — financial security, thinking sensibly about the future — but there was something else too. When they discovered that elopement weddings were even a thing, it felt like an invitation.
"Running away together seemed the ideal option," they told us. "We decided to elope to a beautiful wedding venue and it felt like we were doing something really special for each other."
A big wedding was never going to be right for them. Most of their friends assumed they were already married. Their parents were no longer with them. There was no pressure, no crowd to manage — just two people ready to make a promise to each other.
Why Millbrook?
Pat and Andy started where most couples do: online, reading reviews and looking at pictures. They knew what they were after — somewhere beautiful, somewhere genuine, with a team they could trust.
Nature matters to them, and Millbrook spoke to that immediately. A small, intimate venue within a large country estate, with lakes, trees, birds and animals all around. The reviews made it clear this was a special place. And then Meg picked up the phone.
"We got in touch and spoke to Meg who was so warm and friendly that we knew this was the place for us," they said. "She kept in touch throughout our planning, offering advice and support as needed."
The Eve of the Wedding: Storm Chandra Arrives
January in Devon has its own ideas. Pat and Andy arrived at Millbrook the evening before their wedding — just as Storm Chandra was sweeping in across the county. It was, by their own description, a very wet and windy night.
But storms pass. By morning, things had calmed considerably, and so had they. "We were surprisingly calm and relaxed and excited about the day ahead," they said. "We just knew we didn't have to worry about anything or anybody as it was all taken care of."
That's the thing about eloping with a team like ours around you. The weather can do what it likes — everything else is handled.
A Ceremony That Was Simple, Dignified and Completely Joyful
Pat and Andy had a clear vision: simple and dignified. No fuss. No performance. Just the two of them, and the words that mattered.
Justine — their wedding co-ordinator on the day — made sure everything flowed beautifully. The registrars were warm and calm, and quickly put them at ease. They stood in front of a roaring log fire in the Summerhouse to say their vows.
"It was completely joyful," they said. And really, what more could you want?
Favourite Moments (and a Happy Surprise)
There was no single stand-out moment for Pat and Andy — the relaxed feeling of the whole day was what they'll always treasure. The ceremony, walking the estate with Michelle, and their evening in the BBQ hut were particular highlights.
The happy surprise? Their photographer, Michelle Ley. Pat describes herself as someone who would rather be behind the camera than in front of it — but Michelle's gentle, relaxed approach made the whole thing a genuine pleasure. "She made us feel at ease and was delightful company,"
After the photographs, they settled in for a generous grazing platter and afternoon tea put together by Justine Wood — a lovely, unhurried way to spend a January afternoon after a wedding.
Five Nights at Pulley Mill
Pat and Andy stayed in Pulley Mill for five nights, and were smitten. They described it as a remarkable space — stunning grounds, a window seat in the lounge perfectly placed for watching the animals, and an apartment stocked with everything you could possibly need, plus a few extra thoughtful touches.
They made use of the hot tub, explored the estate's nature trail (wellies firmly on — the ground was beautifully muddy after Storm Chandra) and spent time exploring what North Devon had to offer. Walking sections of the North Devon Coast Path was a real highlight — dramatic winter coastline, fresh air, and plenty of space to feel very far away from ordinary life.
What Really Stood Out
Pat and Andy wanted to share something that made a lasting impression — and it's something we're genuinely proud of.
"Something that really stood out for us during our stay was how every single person that we met working at Millbrook was very proud of what they did — not just Bob and Kate the owners, Meg and Justine the wedding co-ordinators, but the housekeepers and groundsmen as well. Everyone went out of their way to make our stay so very special."
Thank you, Pat and Andy. That truly means a great deal to the whole team.
Why Eloping Was the Right Choice
They booked their entire wedding just three months in advance — across Christmas and New Year — and describe the process as completely unstressful. Meg and Justine guided them through everything they needed to do themselves, and handled the rest.
"It was so straightforward to do and with just the two of us it felt so intimate when we said our vows to each other," they told us.
Their advice to anyone thinking about eloping is simple and considered: "It can be too easy when organising a wedding to try and please everyone else at the expense of your own happiness. Eloping like we did cut out the stress — we just had ourselves to think about and were totally focussed on each other. Eloping's not for everyone, but for us it was perfect."
Thinking about a relaxed elopement in Devon? Whether you've been together four years or forty-seven, we'd love to help you plan a day that feels completely, quietly, yours.
