If you live in England or Wales

If you and your partner are resident in England or Wales (or staying here for at least 7 consecutive days before giving notice), these are the steps:

  • Each of you must attend an appointment to give notice at your local Register Office in England or Wales (or the same one if you live together in the same district). See gov.uk guidance.
  • You must have lived in that registration district for at least 7 full days immediately before your notice appointment. (Citizens Advice)
  • Your notice must be given at least 29 days before your ceremony. The notice is valid for up to 12 months.
  • You must provide original documents such as passports, proof of address, and any previous marriage or civil partnership paperwork.

If one or both of you live outside England or Wales (including Scotland or Northern Ireland)

Even if you usually live outside England or Wales, you can still marry at Millbrook Estate in Devon, but you’ll need to follow these requirements:

  • You must both attend a notice appointment in England or Wales and be physically present for at least 8 days before giving notice.
  • If one or both partners are subject to immigration control (non‑British/Irish citizens without settled or pre‑settled status), the notice period may be extended to 70 days instead of 29

If you live overseas (EU or further afield)

Many couples from the EU and beyond choose to celebrate their wedding in Devon. In these cases:

  • You’ll need to follow the rules for England and Wales, since your ceremony takes place here. (gov.uk)
  • Ensure your immigration or visa status permits giving notice or marrying in the UK — a standard visitor visa may not be sufficient. (gov.uk)
  • If the legal process is too complex or time‑restricted, consider a symbolic (non‑legal celebrant) blessing ceremony at Millbrook Estate — we can help you plan this beautifully.
