Elopement Weddings, all of your questions answered!

What is an elopement wedding?

The technical definition of "eloping" is "running away," but in the context of weddings, it means getting married without telling anyone, having a ceremony with just the two of you, or having a very small, intimate wedding with a few close witnesses.

How many people can I invite?

Elopement weddings can be just the two of you (we’d love to be your witnesses at Millbrook!), or you can invite up to 4 people to witness your ceremony.

How many guests can I have at an elopement wedding?

There are no strict rules on how many guests can attend an elopement wedding, but typically, it's just the two of you, or perhaps a few close family members or friends as witnesses.

Is an elopement wedding legal?

Yes, an elopement wedding holds the same legal significance as a larger wedding ceremony. You still need to give notice at your local registry office and sign the wedding register during your ceremony.

Elopement Wedding Dress question

Can I still wear a wedding dress if I’m eloping?

Absolutely! Whether you want to wear a traditional wedding dress, cowboy boots, or an upcycled dress from the back of your wardrobe, it’s your wedding – do it your way!

What is the difference between eloping and getting married?

Eloping means getting married without telling anyone or telling very few people. It’s still a legal ceremony where you become officially married but without the large guest list.

Can I elope and still have a wedding celebration?

Yes, you can! Many couples choose to have a private elopement ceremony and then celebrate later with friends and family at a reception.

Where can I elope to get married in the UK?

Elopement marriages can take place at licensed venues that cater to intimate ceremonies. Millbrook Estate specialises in intimate elopement weddings for just the two of you.

Where is the best place to elope?

Choose a venue that resonates with you both. It’s your special day, and you want to create amazing memories. Millbrook Estate specialises in small, intimate elopement weddings, with a romantic Summer House and beautiful estate grounds to explore.

What happens at an elopement wedding?

Elopement wedding ceremonies are the same as larger weddings, just without the guest numbers. You’ll still be legally married, receive a marriage certificate, and need to give notice at your local registry office beforehand.

Elopement Cheaper than traditional

Is it cheaper to elope or have a traditional wedding?

Elopement weddings are often more cost-effective than larger weddings. With a traditional wedding, you have to consider the cost of feeding and entertaining many guests. Elopements focus on just the two of you (and perhaps a few guests), making it more budget-friendly. At Millbrook, our elopement packages start from £899.

Should I have a big wedding or elope?

Ask yourself what YOU want for your wedding day. Do you want a large venue with all your friends and family, or do you prefer a small, intimate day that's just about the two of you?

Do you need witnesses to elope?

Yes, you’ll need two witnesses to legally marry. We’re happy to be your witnesses at Millbrook Estate, and we offer this service at no extra charge.

How do you announce a marriage after eloping?

Congratulations! Now it’s time to share the news. Tell those closest to you in person if possible, and share a photo of your special day with everyone else. Remember, your loved ones should support your decision to elope – it’s your day, your way.

Can you get married in secret?

Yes, you can get married in secret. The only people who need to know are the two of you, the registrars, and your witnesses. At Millbrook, we can help keep your secret with an intimate ceremony and provide the witnesses.

Can I elope in the UK?

Yes, you can elope in the UK or abroad. It’s your wedding, your way. You can choose to inform friends and family beforehand or keep it a surprise. You can have a ceremony just the two of you or invite your closest loved ones, and you might even decide to have a celebration later on.

Where do I start with planning a wedding?

The first step in planning your wedding is deciding what type of wedding you want – just the two of you, an intimate wedding with close family and friends, or a big family celebration. Next, set a budget. Once you have this, start researching your dream venue.

What should I book first for my wedding?

Once you’ve chosen a venue, it should be the first thing you book, as it will determine your wedding date based on availability.

How do you legally get married in the UK?

Firstly, find a wedding venue. After that, you need to book registrars through the local registry office where your venue is located. You’ll then need to give notice of your marriage at your local registry office, no earlier than 12 months and no later than 28 days before your ceremony date.

What is the cost of registrar fees?

Registrar fees are paid directly to the registry office. The cost varies depending on the day of the wedding, but you should budget around £450. A £50 deposit is required upon booking, with the remaining balance payable 2 months before the wedding date.

How quickly can you get married in the UK?

In England and Wales, you must give 28 days’ notice at the Registry Office before the marriage can take place. Your ceremony must then take place within 12 months of giving notice. See our Get Married Quickly Page for More information.
